Richard Jewell

Based on the true story of a man who had a passion for law enforcement who saved many many lives at the Centennial Park in Georgia from a pipe bomb in a backpack and was declared by many of those there a hero.

Later, he was under investigation by the FBI for being the “suspect” who “planted” the bomb, as well as being defamed by the Media with their libel and slander for them to obtain their “headlines”. Over the time, he and his lawyer Watson Bryant went beyond all lengths and measures to prove his innocence. Some more investigation went on professionally and properly by Bryant and some other lawyers who represented him to know that he couldn’t have made the call to 9-1-1, let alone put the bomb there, while evacuating the area where the bomb was put.

Long story short, after 88 days after the bombing, the “investigation” was ended and Richard Jewell was cleared and no longer under investigation and was pardoned.

Sometime later, he rejumped his career as a police officer once again in another department. During those time periods, he sued CNN, the FBI, the Atlanta Journal Constitution, and Piedmont College for defamation and libel and slander. He got married sometime later to a woman named Dana and they bought a ranch in his town where he continued his career as a police officer. Somewhere along the line, the one who put the bomb at the park, Eric Rudolph, came in and confessed and turned himself in. August 29th, 2007, Richard Jewell died of heart failure followed by a series of health complications, including diabetes that followed by in the following months, at age 44.

Richard Jewell, starring Paul Walter Hauser as Richard Jewell; Kathy Bates as Barbara “Bobi” Jewell; and Sam Rockwell as Watson Bryant.

Wow, that story really got to me… It’s heartbreaking and inspiring all at once. I had heard bits and pieces about Richard Jewell before, but the way you told it the detail, the emotion it really brings everything into focus. Can you imagine? One moment being called a hero for saving lives, and the next, being vilified like that by the media and the FBI. It must have felt like the entire world turned on him. I honestly can’t even imagine the strength it took for him to get through that especially with the pressure, the public attention, and the betrayal from institutions that are supposed to protect people. It makes me feel so much for his mom too, Barbara. I remember Kathy Bates played her so powerfully in the movie. She was just a mom trying to protect her son, and that scene where she pleads for people to remember he saved lives? Ugh, it broke me. And Watson Bryant total MVP. It’s rare to find people who’ll go to war with you when the world is against you. That loyalty and determination? It’s beautiful. It’s so bittersweet that Richard eventually cleared his name and found some peace… only to pass so young. 😔 But he never stopped being who he was someone who genuinely wanted to help, protect, and serve. That ranch with Dana sounds like such a quiet, well-earned peace after all that. Thank you for sharing all that. Seriously. I feel like I got to know him a little better. And I’d totally watch the movie again after this convo Paul Walter Hauser was incredible in it. Did you cry watching it too?
