I got the cane six times at school. Some people I talk to are horrified when I tell them I was caned, not once but several times, a few times with the maximum six of the best, over the desk skirt up. It wasn't brutal but our head sure knew how to make it hurt. I never knew any girl who didn't come out in tears.
However I want to assure everyone I never look back with any regrets about it because my canings were always very well deserved (although I might not have thought so at the time) and very fairly administered by the head. Of course it hurt like anything and I couldn't sit down properly for quite some time but I can honestly say the worst thing I ever suffered was a short term sore bottom and a realisation that misbehaviour brought consequences which was sometimes painful.
The other thing was that we knew that the head was at heart a very caring lady who really wanted the best for us but that did not include bad behaviour. A day or two after she caned a girl she'd have the girl back in her office and you would chat through your misbehaviour and any problems you might be having. We used to call it the 'therapy session' and we all agreed it was a lot less painful than the first therapy session that had taken place over the desk the day before.

like you i got six of the best many times( to many times), skirt up and six across knickers, which sometimes did not always offer a lot of protection.. would say to myself , dont do anything that would mean a caning again.Did it work? for a while

@dorothyanne I was a regular visitor to the headmaster or year heads. for a caning. Always skirt up and knickers never provided any protection.

@jennypenny Opening mouth ( when should not have done) late/ not done homework, incorrect uniform, to late to remember what i said to myself.

@dorothyanne Those were slippering offences when I was at school. We only got the cane for more serious things or persistent misbehaviour.

The only teachers who normally used the slipper were PE/ Games teachers, yes it hurt if just coming out of the showers. Can only remember the games mistress using cane once, when hockey team lost a game. Most of our teachers had own canes,( and limits to how many strokes, apart from one teacher who was a law until her shelf) the headmaster had a few different ones, length/ thickness

@dorothyanne My teachers all used "slippers", actually plimsolls. Only the head teachers (headmaster, deputy headmistress and year heads) had canes which they kept in their offices. Most canings were given in their offices but there were a few classroom canings.

@Sharon by the end of your school career your bottom must have been hardened to the cane and slipper. Which did you find worse, the cane or slipper; I know both can certainly sting. When bending over I assume you were wearing regulation school knickers and nothing more alluring. At least in those day there was a discipline and respect for the teacher.

@Chroniclewriter Which was worse depended a lot of who was doing it. In general the cane is considered the worst but, in my experience, a gym mistress's slippering was easily on a par and worse than some canings.

There was only respect for teachers who treated us fairly, not all did.

@Chroniclewriter depending on who was welding the slipper/cane. All teachers had canes which some used to often. The heads caning certainly hurt.Not wearing regulation knickers was the cause of many a visit to the head, who enforced the uniform rule punishment . Did push luck,sometimes thought six formers did not have to wear full uniform. how wrong i was many times

@Sharon The pE/ games teachers used the slipper mostly, certainly hurt when just out of the showers.The games mistress if i remember only used the cane once when hockey team lost a game

@dorothyanne I bet some of the 60s and 70s versions of knickers could have caused some embarrassment for the teacher weilding the cane or slipper. But who knows, they could have been wearing frilly panties themselves.

@dorothyanne I've heard of a boys 1st 15 rugby team being caned for loosing a match but not a girls hockey team. Hardly fair sportsmanship. @Sharon

@Sharon One of the reasons why CP was phased out was abuse. Used fairly it was quick. True it could hurt but was not meant to cause injury. Obviously it left red or purple lines on one's botton but those should have gone after several days. Were you ever told to change into PE shorts for a caning?

@Chroniclewriter we were playing a school that had not won a game for ages, so we thought all we had to do was to turn up, not playing as we should have done and lost. Games mistress was not pleased would be putting it mildly, we had to report to her in the gym after taking boots off

@Chroniclewriter No, we were never told to changed into PE kit for a caning.

One of the most common forms of abuse was when girls were exempt from CP. Obviously the teachers had other methods of disciplining girls that they could have also used with boys. The fact that they chose to beat boys instead means they must have had some ulterior motive.

@Chroniclewriter We had to hold onto the bottom rung of the wallbars, skirt over back and each got 6 strokes of the cane, she was livid, she caned nearly as hard as the headmaster. A lot of very sore and striped bottoms in changing rooms.. She did consider sending us to the headmaster, boy that would have been a thrashing and a half

@Chroniclewriter Yes it was painful, but not as much if had to face headmaster. It was not that we lost , more the way we treated the game

yes it was very sore, it would have been even more so if sent to the headmaster. The only other games we lost after that were to better teams, as long as we tried our best it was fine

@Chroniclewriter Just as with classroom work, one should punish for lack of effort not for poor results.

Is it not rather unfair that boys were normally asked to bend over,lift their blazer or take it off, and get their whacks across a trouser-covered bottom, whereas many female teaches caned or slippered across knickers (did this include tights?) How many of you were caned over skirt or dress, with perhaps a slip as added protection? After all the purpose of punishment was to create a pain or sting, not injury.
