I got the cane six times at school. Some people I talk to are horrified when I tell them I was caned, not once but several times, a few times with the maximum six of the best, over the desk skirt up. It wasn't brutal but our head sure knew how to make it hurt. I never knew any girl who didn't come out in tears.
However I want to assure everyone I never look back with any regrets about it because my canings were always very well deserved (although I might not have thought so at the time) and very fairly administered by the head. Of course it hurt like anything and I couldn't sit down properly for quite some time but I can honestly say the worst thing I ever suffered was a short term sore bottom and a realisation that misbehaviour brought consequences which was sometimes painful.
The other thing was that we knew that the head was at heart a very caring lady who really wanted the best for us but that did not include bad behaviour. A day or two after she caned a girl she'd have the girl back in her office and you would chat through your misbehaviour and any problems you might be having. We used to call it the 'therapy session' and we all agreed it was a lot less painful than the first therapy session that had taken place over the desk the day before.

Don't know where you got that picture of me being caned at school !!!!! It MUST be me as thats exactly what I must have looked like!!!

That pic of that poor girl is a salutary reminder, all these years later, just how much it hurt. Until you have had the cane, you just can't fully understand the shock and pain.

But your right, the shock of the first stroke is pure agony along with the three or five that follow. I always found it hard to walk straight after being caned as they were always well applied.

@DaveRoberts Fortunately the next person waiting in the corridor was always a girl. One of the few advantages of single sex school. I agree totally with your description of a caning. Walking normally in the immediate aftermath was a painful exercise in itself. And my recollection is that the next day everything around the buttocks and extending to the hips was so stiff and sore that I walked like an arthritic old lady if no one was around.

@april50 I went to a single sex school as well. We were usually caned at the end of the day around 4.00 p.m. so we could go home straight afterwards. The first time I got caned on the bottom, I remember thinking it wasn't too bad after the first whack but a few seconds later the sting set in and the other two strokes soon followed. I was in a bit of a daze when I left the head's office so no doubt I couldn't walk straight either. I inspected the damage when I got home and the soreness lasted a few days. Hard chairs were uncomfortable to sit on!

Two good points, Rebecca. Interesting how different schools scheduled caning. Some, like yours, had a fixed time and 'line-up' others you were caned at any time the offence was detected. My school did both. That caning I got for my Chariots of Fire escapade was inflicted as soon as I was hauled to the headmistress' study. But we also had an 'end-of-day' line up, where you actually had to report at 3.30pm. So one teeny weeny benefit of such a summons was you got off most of the last period. (I joke, of course. Nothing ameliorates a caning!)

The other point - I agree- after a caning its not only your bottom that is messed up. You say you left in a daze. So true. i used to say it turned my brain into scrambled eggs. The whole experience of a school caning for me - maybe others have greater mental fortitude - messed my head up terribly for days after.

@april50 I agree with both Rebecca and April. In any circumstance, pain plays havoc with our brain, and the pain of a caning is intense and can persist for hours. But in addition, there is the shock of what's happening to you. Even if you are as guilty as hell, the shock of being sentenced to a caning, the suddenness and speed with which the sentence was then usually administered, and the impersonal -almost judicial - environment in which you were punished, certainly left me mentally groggy, and I can remember consoling friends after they had been caned, and seeing exactly the same disorientation.

@jennypenny My memory - and I am not sure it is an actual memory now, but more like a party piece fixed by many repetitions over the years - is like many here: the real pain of the first stroke was almost like a delayed reaction. But what i do remember at the very instant the cane made its impact was something akin to an electric shock that suffused my whole nervous system. As if it had hit my brain as much as it had hit my bottom. VERY hard to describe, but the shock to your whole system preceded, if only by microseconds, what you describe as the "burning rod across your behind".

@april50 Very well written. I never had the rattan cane in school but as an adult, I have sampled a few strokes with a bamboo song and dance cane. Amazingly intense and as I mentioned, it was only a very mild "taste" and no where near the real thing.

A real stroke with bamboo is very risky since bamboo is famous for shattering into razor sharp pieces. I can relate to the thoughts and feelings here. Having gotten a really intense caning is an admission ticket to a very elite club or group. If you survived it, you enjoyed the new status. It was like that in the boys clubs I belonged to

As far as the learning that is alleged to come the moral reflection inspired by the proverbial inability to sit down in comfort, I have my doubts. No doubt caution about the commission of a caning-certain offense was increased but as more than one experienced recipient has noted, many behaviors remained accessible and must have been regarded as "worth it" somehow or other.

@april50 Were girls more likely than guys to offer comfort post-caning to each other? Did anyone offer a Pond's cold cream application?

@Alfred22 I went to a girls only grammar school, so I cannot speak for boys, but in general girls who had been caned together provided each other with a great deal of post punishment support and mutual comfort. It is an experience which is very difficult to describe. it is very emotional.

But my experience, even when a girl had been caned for a solitary offence, her classmate friend were very sympathetic and supportive. At least ostensibly. I think there is a natural human tendency to rather enjoy other people's suffering, and i suspect at least some of the 'support' hid a secret pleasure that you had had your comeuppance, and rather enjoyed seeing the physical evidence of your caning.

Ah, the memories of Ponds Cold Cream! I had a large jar of it in my bedroom as my mother was a great believer in spanking, but the reality is it is totally useless - it just feels that you are doing something to extinguish the fire.

At school, somewhere there was a jar of Astral Cream which magically appeared if you wanted to do something - anything - to reduce the sting. A pure placebo in my experience/

@NataliaT In my girl's only school we rather enjoyed seeing other girls "stripes" and when we were 13/14 we went through a phase of proudly showing them off. There was some sympathy though for girls which had (as we thought) been unjustly caned - perhaps when the slipper might have sufficed.
