I Have Seen Domestic Violence

I live in a roominghouse. I am the oldest (age 75) and the only woman living here; 6 residents, 5 of them men, mostly retired Army guys. I've been here for 3 years.

Today two of the guys went out to celebrate St. Patrick's Day and found that most bars in the area have closed up due to the current plague.

So they got some booze at a liquor store and came back home.

About an hour later a fight broke out between them. It was upstairs in the hall right over my room. It really sounded bad, bodies slamming into furniture and walls, very loud colorful language, flesh hitting flesh.

This is not the first fight I've observed here during my 3 years of residency. There have been several. The most violent fight happened right after I moved in 3 years ago. It was between the manager, a big tall muscular tough guy fighting with his fists and one of the older tenants who was in a wheelchair fighting with a machete knife. Finally, as Jimmy chased Darrell around, speeding after Darrell in his fast electric wheelchair, swinging his machete knife at Darrell, all over the first floor which includes a big kitchen, a huge den with a giant screen TV, one hall and a door to the patio, someone (not at our house) sensibly phoned the police. They arrived shortly and, much to their credit, managed to get the two men to calm down and apologize to each other.

Other fights have included fist fights in the rose garden next to my room (big tree there, lots of shade, and it's the desert here so shade is important), also fights in the parking area at the back of the house. Since all these guys are also armed to the teeth, and strong supporters of the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution, I'm just glad there have been no gunfights here.

Other than that, I like my roominghouse, known as the Mini-Mansion to its residents. It's in a rich neighborhood, quiet, little crime in the area, on top of a hill with a good view of the area. It's a big beautiful house with a rose garden, a back vegetable and flower garden (including a blooming indica marijuana plant), and my room is directly next to the swimming pool, a lovely view through my patio door. There are two citrus trees on the property and I have a nice electric citrus juicer in the kitchen for the oranges and the grapefruits.

The Mini Mansion in is OK with me. But I can't help but wonder when the next fight will happen.

That must be tough, I hope youre okay. There are very few situations that alcohol cant make much worse. Stay safe.
