I Speak Bengali

Within the first decade of the 20th Century, the vast state of Bengal was partitioned into East Bengal and West Bengal by the British regime. At that time whole of Bengal was part of British India.

People say it was done to divide the Hindus and Muslims under the famous divide and rule policy of the British.

In 1947, British India was partitioned into present day India and Pakistan (a state for Muslim minority).

The landmass of Pakistan consisted of the present day Pakistan (then called West Pakistan) and present day Bangladesh ( called East Bengal until 1947 and then East Pakistan until it's independence from Pakistan in 1971 ).

So the capital of Bangladesh Or East Bengal is Dhaka as we know it. And capital of West Bengal is Kolkata which resides in India.

Wikipedia says Bengali is the 10th most spoken language in the world. Most of the Bengali speakers are Muslims and reside mainly in East Bengal and in appreciable numbers in India as well. And the rest are mostly Hindus who reside primarily in West Bengal.

Many Bengalis have migrated to rest of India and other parts of the world.

Hence, if someone is Bengali they don't necessarily live in or have their ancestors coming from Bangladesh.
