Is threatening suicide a surefire signal to gtfo of a relationship?

Did they literally say they were going to kill themselves if you left?
Or was it that they were expressing depression and suicidal thoughts. There is a huge difference.
My ex repeatedly said he would kill himself if I left his abusive ass. It was a lie. He couldn't care less. But I've also know people who expressed thoughts of depression and wanting to die because they felt alone and unwanted.
But even the wording doesn't necessarily indicate what they ate really saying. A person trying to manipulate you by holding you emotionally hostage saying they would kill themselves if you left may be someone manipulating you. Or it could just be someone really depressed who knows that right then, whatever good uppit being into their life is the only thing keeping them from tumbling into the abyss.
Heck I've been there (didn't tell my partner) but there was a point where I was so depressed I did not know how I would manage without him because of other situations in my life that were depressing me. I got meds to get me through it and I'm better now. He has no idea he saved my life just by being there for me.

@CleverFunnyNameGoesHere It was a "take me seriously or I'm gonna do it" sort of thing. I can understand people thinking I was being an ass towards someone who was suicidal, but she wasn't suicidal, she just wanted to act like a child to carry on a conversation that already ended about something that literally did not matter. Still, nice to see a shared experience.... Err, half shared... If she was suicidal and a complete mess the last thing I'd do is make her feel worse or leave her......
