I went through this a lot with pain medication. The DEA has really clamped down on them and unfortunately legitimate patients are the ones that pay for it.

My advice, is to talk with your doctor. My doctor's assistant used to call around for me to find a pharmacy that had it, so I didn't have to go hunting.

I would also ask to talk personally with the pharmacist. Some medications, especially non-narcotic you might be able to get him to adjust his inventory levels so you aren't having this problem. I think it depends a lot on the pharmacy. Smaller ones tend to be more willing to do things like that.

And finally, can you get it via mail order? I get a Humira injection pen kit every month through a specialty pharmacy and they mail it right to my door in a cooler. I love it.
