I Have a Difficult Decision to Make

I am an engineer. My job isn't so much. What I do have is:
1. The best boss I'll ever have
2. Years of stable work
3. Decent $
4. A 45 minute commute
5. Work that isn't that interesting

Now, Ford Motor Co. needs software engineers badly, so they offer me:
1. A 25% raise
2. Engineering opportunities
3. Half the commute
4. No promises about the health of the work environment (but I met with my would-be supervisors and they seem fine)
5. A 1-year contract. I'm told they often renew.

Now I gave my boss the bad news and he surprised me by trying to compete. He can match the salary and offers the option to telecommute. He can't offer the career options and Ford can't offer stability nor the certainty of the tone of the work environment. Don't know what I'm going to do.

Definitely a difficult decision but you have 2 great options in front of you ☺️

The ford one might be more risky but it sounds like even if they don’t renew, you are in enough demand that you’d be able to find something else.
@Fallflower I think the market in this town is red hot right now. Who's to say next year it won't be as bad as it was in, say, 2011 when I first got here?

@ImperialAerosolKidFromEP the wise thing to do is stay. But you still may not feel fulfilled or challenged. What do you want more? Excitement or security? Security can be exciting if you look at it in a certain way.
@Fallflower it's complicated. I'm not a risk-taker. I've kept myself out of a lot of trouble that way. But I'm also not someone given heavily to doctrine, so maybe this is the time to break with the non-risk-taking doctrine

Stay with what you know. Best boss is gold. At 41-45 yrs old, career options is not as important as stability and a good boss. If you want to be engaged in more interesting work, go to school part time and/or focus on a side-hustle.

I would take the raise and stay. It’s not everyday you find a job, where your boss is not an asshole 🤷🏼‍♀️
@SW-User tell me about it! My last boss made my job abject misery! But at my age I'll never get an opportunity like this one again

I love my job itself but I work for an asshole. Having a good boss is so important
@chuck7882 that's a contradiction to me. You just described my last boss, and that alone made the job abject misery
