Yes i heard that often. Sometimes people claimed that no one understand them, here.. listen to me :
Example is me and my sis. I tend to see something for what it is, but my sister tend to see the good / potentially good thing in something. A cynical vs optimist, she can see what i can't see.
In the end, no one understand you like you do! And nobody's going to understand you! What you have to do is open your self to the possibility that others are also right. Because.. while you calling them all close minded you too being close minded. And stop being so self-centered that you think you are different! Don't you realized that others think the same way about you? What makes you so 'special' that others have obligation to understand you and your thought. Do you ever care about other people and their thought?
So.. society is made up from individuals and they are unique on their own, we are different and each have own unique perspective. Once you understand that it won't matter anymore if they understand you.
