PMs help in making new friends?
Every time I tried to initiate a PM, I lost! I stick to open forum talk. Whats your experience?

I think it is extremely difficult to make on a site like this REAL friends.
PMs have never worked out for me in the past; that´s why I am rejecting them since years.
Instead I have watched and observed people here and started to interact with them in public threads to get to know them better.
And only when I have checked them out for a really long time I went into PMs.
And this has worked for me.
So I have found my longtime-friend. We were together for about six years and had daily contact. It was a really, really good and deep friendship.
With the other friend I am not that long together - but nevertheless things are working. And this friend is the only reason why I am still on SW.
It will be easy for you to find shallow friends here. But it takes indeed much, much time and patience to find friends here. I mean REALLY friends.
I hope one day you will find some - whatever for kind of friends you are looking for - and wish you good luck with that. 🍀

You used past tense for your 6 year friend. Hope all is well.
I am still not sure what i am looking for. I dont think its any specific requirement. I seem to gel with radically different types of people. But whenever i have PMed i have got snubbed for some reason or the other. So i prefer open spaces. Though i do respond to PMs i receive, i dont push and prod to continue the conversation. And i stopped initiating any :)

I think a lot depends on messages sent and even where a person is at emotionally. Some messages are people trying to score while others chat and keep it simple.
I've made real and deep friendships through pm and on public sites. Not here... on other sites. They are sincere and kind hearted... and some are missed so very much.

@WandererTony I am glad to see you know the possibility of making friends and haven't limited yourself.
As for a good time here, we'll see how it goes. Usually, newcomers have a hard time fitting in... especially if they see things differently than most! 🤣
