I used to have hamsters (no, that's not a disease) but much prefer gerbils. They are so gentle - I've never been bitten apart from a slight nip when they're not sure whether your finger is food or not and just try it, while hamsters will bite until their teeth touch! Also, they are so much more active than hamsters.
