I Am a Teacher

One of the moments I fear most in schoolyear is the day when I have my first meeting with my department colleagues (who more often than not change every year), and we must take decisions regarding the subject we are going to teach, materials, visits...

As I grow older, I am getting less and less tolerant to people who take disagreements to their suggestions as a personal attack. Luckily, this year (and most years it has been so too) it has not happened.

We did not agree on everything, but sometimes one of us gave in, other times someone else did. The way it should be. I feel quite relieved.

Give-and-take should be the way. It does not help if people are too calculative. After all, everyone has to work together in the school for the year. But I've come to realise that people can be so different. It's not easy having to teach and having to manage adults as well in our work.

A department head's work is never easy. Those young ones who aspire to move up the career ladder really do not know how draining it can be. But then again, I forget that there are also different kinds of heads, the type who sits in his ivory tower and barks orders and the type who goes down to the teachers' level and get his hands dirty doing the job with them.

One thing that we must do is to practise self-care. Easier said than done, I know, but I hope you'd be able to do more of it in the new term,

@novembermoon There are people who use every petty gain in these decisions as a great victory to feed their stupid egos. I hate that kind of people and prefer to avoid them when I can.
