I Love Christmas

I remember those Christmas's of the past when you sat anxiously on the stairs at 5 AM and Mom or Dad saying "Santa hasn't come yet go back to bed." My older sister laughing as I grumbled and crawled back into bed to wait for everyone to get up and head down to the living room. I never seemed to appreciate my one Grandma's homemade gifts of socks and mittens with a box of freshly wrapped fruit and her homemade peppermint sticks. I was always so grateful and did value what I was given although I realized even as a young child that there were 5 other siblings to buy for. My Mama always had a smile on her glowing face and my Dad just seemed to be positively his usually happy self with that big beautiful grin on his handsome face.

When my sisters and I would sit patiently waiting for our great uncle's horses and sleigh to come and pick us up to take us back to his big old farm house in the country it was so exciting. The beautiful black horses would be all decked out with red harnesses and their bells just a jingling as they pranced through the snow..There was a magic in the air as we made our way back the broken second and felt the soft snow flakes landing on our faces. Santa would be waiting for us with a big bag of toys and my great aunt's table would be laden with baked goodies with homemade fudge and cinnamon candy. It's those poignant reminders of how much joy was given and what we shared with each other as siblings and children.

A Christmas eve as the youngest in the choir, a little girl with big blue eyes and golden curls with a red hat sitting atop my head with a tassel hanging in my eyes. The minister's wife a very stout lady given me the evil eye as I fidgeted in the pew trying to take that darn annoying tassel out of my eye. I would sit in awe when the clock struck midnight and we commenced singing Emmanuel my lilting soprano voice rising above the altos and tenors. I remember looking up at the stained glass window feeling a warmth inside of me as I contemplated the birth of the baby Jesus. I cherish those memories and wish I had of appreciated them more as a kid..

It was the visits on Christmas day to both my Grandmother's houses that always was a very special occasion and treat for us. I was never a big fan of goose but the aroma of turkey, pies and stuffing would fill the air at both places. There were always lots of cousins milling about and we had loads of fun. Driving home in the early evening was a joyous occasion as we stared at the Christmas lights on our way back home. I remember hugging my Dad so very tightly as I thanked him for a wonderful Christmas and kissed his stubbly cheek. My Mama would get a hug and she would affectionately run her hand over my golden curls and kiss me gently. I truly loved how much they gave of themselves and especially at Christmas. I miss the closeness and the wonderful feeling of happiness that enveloped me with my families love surrounding us all.

Merry Christmas everyone and a Very Happy, healthy and prosperous New Year..
