I Value Friendship

I'm a lucky guy. I have two best friends and both have been for over 20 years. Sometimes I have moments when life gets busy and for a moment.... I sadly forget the tremendous positive influence both of these people have had in my life. They have been there for all of the major events of my adult life.... Birth, death, break ups, illness, victories and failures.

Yesterday I had some tests done and had not told my friend, but as I was sitting in the waiting room I got this simple text.

"Was just thinking of you this morning after I got the kids off to school. Just wanted to let you know I love ya buddy. Hope you have a good day!"

This little random act made my mood change and I felt way better. Friendship is about showing up... Not when it's expected.... But instead it's about showing up when it's not expected.

It dawned on me this morning that I need to write more about friendship. What it means, it's power in our lives and the ways that I can elevate my game to be a better friend.

I think we all have people in our life that we have powerful connections with.... but for a variety of reasons those people don't show up for us when we need them.

My first reaction as I pondered this was not a positive one. But as I considered it more I began to realize that such people still can have a huge impact on our lives. It made me remember that as a person who truly strives to be a good and decent human being, that I should love and accept people as they are..... Not where I think they should be.

Of course I am not advocating allowing toxic people into our lives. I think it's important to set boundaries etc. I think that trust is earned and thus friendship, deep friendship with longevity, takes time.

So today I am thankful. Thankful for the people in my life who love and care about me... Thankful that I am not alone. And that there is a handful of people that love ME in spite of my flaws and brokenness.

It's a good day indeed.

I value your opinions, stories etc. pilot. The Reason being is because I've come to understand at this point in my life that, Experience is the best Teacher. Your still young guy in my eyes. but still older than myself. lol jk. I made this a point to say, because in your story, you say that the two friends you have. you have had for over 20 years.
And i ask myself. After i read this. Do I even have any friends? what is the true definition of a friend? Does everyone have there own standards on that? idk?
Because the friends i thought were friends hardly reach out to even say hello hows things at 37. Maybe i have yet to find a true friend.
Or maybe it takes a little more experience for the true friend to reveal..
none the less, you're lucky dude

This was an inspiring posting. I often wonder about how many people truly appreciate friends of the heart. These times are fast, too fast. Takes time to make friends, grow them like trees....True friends love you for all that you are, good and bad. You are lucky to have friends. Each of us should take the time to tell them how much they matter to us. Send them some words. Call them. Let your heart speak freely. Nice to read something positive here today, Patrick.

My best friend knew me so well, he would know what emotional state I was in from miles away. Or when I was sitting by the beach he would text "see any whales out there?" Even though I hadn't told him where I was. He knew. I lost him to cancer three years ago. I wish I had one more chance to tell him I loved him.

I believe that people hear us after they pass. I suspect he knows..... and if you told him he would hear you. Just my belief.

Thanks for this. After reading, before responding, I sent a text to my oldest friend... Friends since Kindergarten... Just to say hello. You're right. Sometimes those thoughtful sentiments are just what someone needs.
Have a great day, friend:)

you are definitely not alone my friend. When I'm feeling down, I love getting the unexpected text or call from a friend, they usually come when they are most needed
