I Went to Prom
Not The Popular Kid... I changed schools a lot as a child so by the time I reached high school, I knew nobody and most of the students and known each other since elementary school. In fact many of them had older siblings who had preceded them. The first two years I slowly got to know some of the people in my classes and was in a small group that played Dungeons & Dragons (surprise) & Mechwarrior. I also had a fast friendship with a fast talking gal who was African-American and we got along very well and was my lab partner.
Now, my mother told me that I should go to prom since you only have this opportunity to do so. I worked up the courage and asked my lab partner to go to prom my Junior year. She agreed. My mom drove us downtown to the prom site and we both had a very good time even if I'm a poor dancer. :)
My senior year, we both went together again except this time with three friends as well so 2 guys and 3 girls. The other guy drove his parents' car and we had a good time. I even got to dance with two girls at once, my date and the other girl. Afterward we all went back to my date's house and watched some horror movies she had chosen. They were Phantasm & one other that I don't remember anymore.
All and all, my mother was right, it was worth going, I had fun and have memories and friends who I'm still in touch with today. Which is amazing considering where I was for the last 12 years, but I made some extraordinary friends in high school. I wasn't the popular kid and didn't participate in much, but I can say I like my high school memories.
