I Dropped Out of Law School

I started law school in 1976 after spending two years teaching high school at an American school in San Jose, Costa Rica.

When I started I had no intention of dropping out after two years. My plan was to be the next William Kunstler. I even joined the National Lawyer's Guild.

After the first semester, I was in the top ten percent of the class, and was invited to join the law journal, which I did.

However, this was just after "Paper Chase", and rather than feeling worked to death, I was feeling a bit bored.

I had worked two summers during undergrad as a mover. Law school is a three year program, and they give you five years to complete it. The five year expiration time - unlike most other graduate programs - is because the law is organic and in constant flux, what with new laws and court decisions - among other factors.

Anyway, I asked the moving company that I had previously worked for to hire me as an over-the-road mover/truck driver for two years, and got a leave of absence from the law school.

I started seeing the country, enjoying it, and - especially prior to deregulation under Reagon - getting paid a good salary to do it.

The next time I really thought about law school was probably about ten years later. I would have had to beg them to give me another shot - having wasted the first one - and I would have had to be a first year law student again.

The first wasn't too likely, and the second wasn't too attractive, so I just kept driving. I pretty much retired last year at age 66 - though I am helping out on local moves a couple days a week to stay out of trouble, stay physically active, and get paid a bit to do so.

I have reached full retirement age for social security, so the additional income won't have any impact on my monthly benefits.
