Probably more about the cat in my experience. Not many young pups would threaten an adult cat in a one-on-one. But I'd first get another cat for your present cat's sake.

@hlpflwthat Another thought ... rescue operations often have an idea whether or not their animals are suited to different environments - like existing pets in a home. May be worth a shot.
