I Am Going to Rant For a Minute

I quit asking people what kind of music they like years ago to avoid the enjoyable and fascinating typical responses "all music" "everything but rap" "everything but country" "lots of stuff" "eh rock" and so on. My frustrated mind and impression I had about them became several unpleasant assumptions: They are not interested in music. They don't want to divulge what they really like out of fear of criticism. If they are this broad in this topic response how boring are they about other topics? Ohhhh! So you like Polka, Trance, Gospel, Elevator music, Sailing- by Christopher Cross, ICP and everything in between? Cool, maybe you are interesting you just left out all the details. What kind of food do you like? Ummmmm... food.

In all fairness, it's a hard question to answer, unless you are really into something specific, like the early 1850's or the Dutch house scene. So you kinda go with the easy answer. Music is such an easy thing to love that a promiscuous love of "all" is allowed.

@LienOnYourDreams: Maybe you are just really into music itself and people are just into that fuzzy feeling that music provides, no matter what style it is. My mom hates classic music but she always cries with opera. If you ask her she doesn't like opera but it gets an emotion out of her. I don't enjoy house music yet you will find me dancing to Gusto, with gusto! Sometimes it's not about the genre. It's about the feeling or a song or the mood.

See, now a response like that is music. I love it! You are not boring :) Thought, feeling, stories, mood, expression.

Sometimes if people aren't directly passionate about something, then they won't have an interesting take on it. You can find out indirectly by getting to know someone. Exp:
Ewww...I hate mint ice cream, they 'don't care' about what music they listen to, but they always seem to get excited when a certain song comes on...etc.

Well, yeah. "What kind of music do you like?" is a broad, boring, scripted question, you're going to typically get broad, boring, scripted answers.

In many experiences I pried way deeper than the broad boring question. Results were often the same in answer.

you can get a better read on people by asking what music they don't like...
