Thomas Picton

On the way into Carmarthen is an obelisk in the middle of the road. It has a pretty Christmas tree in front. I never thought about it until I read yesterday that "Sir" Thomas Picton made his fortune by selling slaves. Now I can't wait until Carmarthen tear it down and replace it with a statue which means something to our people.
His actions in Trinidad were disgusting even by the standards of the time but the reason for the statue is his military service.Mainly in the Napoleonic wars. The Duke of Wellington sang his praises.
He was killed at Waterloo. He was also a local MP.
@TheSirfurryanimalWales But he made his money selling people. All lives matter.
@LilirWyddfa yes...that was wrong but sadly normal for the time.I am not a fan of applying modern standards to the past.History is what I got my degree in.We can’t educate people by eradicating the past.
@TheSirfurryanimalWales I understand. We must always judge people in the context of their time. I was made to have sex with a church member when I was eight. But we must remember it was 2008 and acceptable in those days.

@LilirWyddfa So what do you think of Jason Momoa & Would You Do Him
@JohnOinger I don't know them. I know the obelisk in Carmarthen which celebrates slavery.
