I Got The Slipper At School

As I have said during my first year in secondary school my form teacher was a very nice young lady but she was unfailngly strict. As my friend and I found out when we were caught talking in assembly and made to stand up by the headmistress. We were both very red in the face and I thought we would get the cane but she referred the matter to our form teacher as we were only in the first year. Miss was not pleased and gave us a good lecture and told us she would deal with this during the gym lesson later that day. That was not a pleasant prospect as she was a real dab hand with the slipper. The gym lesson went by and we thought she'd forgotten but sadly for us at the end she called this to her, gave us a lecture as to how we had let the class down, and then we both went over her knee for a good dose of the slipper on our gym knickers. We were both hopping around and holding burning bottoms by the time she finished, much to the amusement of the other girls. I think the sight of two very red bottoms in the changing rooms acted as a warnng to other girls as no-one else talked during assembly after that!

Always painful, but you were still a tad lucky on two scores - first, being made to stand up in assembly by the headmistress, despite being first years, usually meant a trip to her office and the cane -it was her honour you had offended! - and a bit lucky in not having to bend over for the slipper later - I would imagine your form mistress had a far harsher swing when she was standing, rather than having you over her knee

Yes agree on all counts. @angela2106

@angela2106 I agree. If that happened to me it would have been six strokes of the cane, first year or not. Do you speak from experience of being punished for similar?

@SW-User You are certainly correct. Our morning assembly was essentially a religious service – a hymn, a bible reading, prayers, and a second hymn. Only then did the headmistress take centre stage, and absolute attention and total silence was the order of the day. I don’t remember it as a time for homilies or general declarations of war. It was mainly notices. But silence was rigorously enforced. So disobedience was rare, but on the few occasions I recall someone being caught, the offending girls were sent out of assembly there and then to wait outside her study, for the inevitable six of the best on their bottoms. Although I can ascribe each caning I got at school to my own crass stupidity, even I wasn’t that stupid to talk during those sacrosanct few minutes at Assembly.

My one similar experience is a memory that still fills me with revulsion. It was at Junior School, probably when I was 10, and a friend and I were caught giggling when a particularly repulsive bully, was being caned at assembly – one stroke on each hand. (Believe it or not, such canings at assembly were not infrequent. How times change.) We were called to the front by a fuming headmistress, and though we were both star pupils, give one stroke of the cane in front of maybe 200 other pupils. Not a memory that evokes the slightest hint of nostalgia

As you say, how times change. I did get six strokes from the deputy headmistress for slamming my hymn book closed during one assembly. There were about five of us all lined up outside her office. I can not recall an assembly caning though. What a shock for you to get caned in front of the school and on the hand. OUCH!@angela2106

I was perhaps lucky I got the slip because it taught me not to talk in assembly again unlike other girls in higher years Who were dispatched out of the assembly and came out the office with incredibly sore bottoms @angela2106

You were indeed very lucky. With your record you would certainly have been caught in later years and got a good caning. @jennypenny

It's a very generalised observation, and as with all generalisation, there are hundreds of exceptions, but your story does confirm one thing, and that is that with school corporal punishments in particular, pupils rarely came back for a second punishment for the same offence (Smoking excluded! For many pupils, they often seemed undeterred from illicit smoking, even after the most salutary caning).

IT'S A GENERALISATION! Generalisations are always wrong, even this one!
