I Grew Up Poor

When I was a kid (about in my teens), I hadn't realized why we had to file for bankruptcy or why my mom got food out of the trash where she worked and that's what we were supposed to eat. Also, my clothes and shoes never fit, and teens can be such jerks about that without realizing something might be going on.

My dad had a gambling problem. He lied a lot. He'd say he got mugged or he had one of his diabetic spells and while he was out, he got robbed. Turned out that he lost whole paychecks on bets. They weren't paying the bills. My mom hadn't known. After she found out, she took over the finances. She never trusted him with money again after that.

It's the biggest reason they got into fostercare too; for extra money. That started another problem for a different story though.

I can relate so bad....lol....My house had no doors and we slept on the floor. We had no AC and most of the time there was nothing to eat. My mom was sick with a mental illness so i had to feed and watch my little brothers after school every day for as long as i can remember.... Thanks for sharing. Brings me a lot of memories...

@tumbleweed Nope. We all sacrificed for the little ones. They were always first and still are. I am honestly glad they don't remember how hard it was... i kept them pretty occupied. A lady in EP told me a long time ago that my brothers would remember that and be grateful one day...but i doubt it :b

My friend's friend lost her parents in an accident when she was 2 yrs old .. she was in the same car but somehow survived .. she was left with two older brothers who raised her like a daughter .. i really get so touched deep inside after listening such stories .. my own problems seems nothing in front of them ..

It was an interesting experience. We never had much money anyway but things weren't bad until he messed it all up with his lies.

@Headlines Respect for you brother

Do your brothers remember any of it? Sometimes that stuff goes right over younger kids' heads. One of my sisters we'd adopted out of foster care had been homeless with her mom, but she didn't realize how desperate their situation was until she got older.

That's best for them, I think. It's hard enough on older kids; but younger ones having to handle the situation like that, having to process it, is a massive shame. Good for you for looking out for them.

I really respect you for facing that kind of problems in your teenage .. that period must have made you so strong mentally

That is sad. I'm sorry you had to live that way.

@Calmsoul Im honestly really happy you didnt have our issues. There's a lot of pain when i think about my childhood. I am happy that there are people like your friend's brothers and myself who watch for the little ones. Makes me happy.
