I Grew Up Poor

Being Poor... Being poor is tough, no doubt about it. We struggle to pay bills, and we have few luxuries. But we always scrape by because people know we're the non trashy kind of poor people. We always pull through because people like us for being kind, honest people. But that's not always enough. In particular, last summer stands as a reminder that having friends is not always enough.

We experienced hunger last summer. There were a few weeks where all we had was soup and sandwiches for days at a time. On some days we had to have one meal, and mom and my step-dad ate almost nothing to make sure my sister and I could eat. Now, we are about to experience that again. But it's not all bad.

Our rough times have made us stronger, more compassionate people. We have dealt with hunger, a fire, homelessness, internal conflict, sickness, and depression in some cases. We have been through much strife, and we are ready for anything life throws at us. Our troubles have prepared us for the future. Whatever happens, we are prepared.
