I Grew Up Poor

My parents divorced and my dad got custody of me, but still had to pay my mom child support (!). So for about 10 years we were pretty poor. Now we weren't as poor as most others' stories here, but poor nonetheless.

I always had enough food to eat, although my dad sometimes went without. No relatives to speak of, so no hand me downs. But most of my clothes came from thrift stores and/or were bought big enough to last for a couple years. Pants and shirts were always patched and so were winter boots.

There wasn't lots of money for heat in Upper Midwest winters. I wore long underwear from October to April most years. I always had a snowsuit or insulated coveralls for winter. My dad thought if it was cold enough for a coat, you needed a snowsuit. It was kind of embarrassing wearing that to school all winter, every winter, but I got used to it and I was thankful for the warmth. When the wind blew--which was often--I'd stay in the snowsuit inside too. In good years, I might get a coat too, so I would wear that too during cold snaps.

There are particular times that being poor has more of a or had a more difficult time maybe finding ways to deal with situations. One such time was the first day or first few days back to school. Most other kids would have newer clothes that fit and then there is the kid sitting on the bus who is wearing a pair of jeans that were better than half way up to his knees. They happened to be the same pair of pants he had worn the year before to school. There were many years when I grew that my jeans were short for me but that pzrticular year was the worst. I remember the night before the first day trying to find a clean pair of socks that might be long enough to covor my legs maybe trying to draw a little less attention to my situation, but even if I pulled them up and stretched them they were too short to stay. Of course there were the other kids who would either make jokes about my jeans or the ones who would take the opportunity to put you down like you were a discrace. My defense mechanism was that I didnt care and try to maybe find another kid to sit with that had it bad also and point out that he had holes in his jeans or that his shoes were worn out to. I always tried to sit in the back of the classroom so other guy's wouldn't stare at the fact my jeans were too short or my tee shirt that I wore was a dingy grey and too small for me.

That's rough, man. My clothes fit, but I would get teased because they were patched and because you could see the long underwear and/or union suit through any holes that weren't patched.

I grew up poor also. Clothes were one pair of handed down jeans and usually just plain white tee shirts

I've seen your stories man. I definitely had an easier time of it than you. But I wouldn't trade it despite the rough spots.
