I Appreciate Memorial Day

I have lost three dear friends to war and today is a day for me to remember them. To remind them that they still have a place in my heart and to reflect on what they have given me. To be honest, I have always cringed hearing the words "Happy Memorial Day". To me, it's not a day of happiness. It's not a day for me to party, to drink, to bbq. Its' a day to go sit on the beach, to think about my friends, maybe to write. To me, it's a day to remember the ones we've all lost. For me, it's Daniel, James, and Tom. That's who my Memorial Day is for.

Bless you. I hope you will have a blessed, peaceful Memorial Day. I don't know about you, but every time I see a soldier, current or former, I always smile warmly at them and thank them for their service.

I don't know anyone who has died while serving, but I think of the ones I know who've had their lives altered by serving. One man, he and I used to play soccer together as children. He was pretty good, I s*cked, as I do at most sports. He is 31 now. Ten years ago, his legs were blown off above the knees by an IED. And my dads' dad, he was shot during the war, had to have his hip joint replaced, which then got infected, and he ended up losing two inches off his right leg. He wore boots with one sole built up to make up the inches, and used a cane to walk. I have naught but love for those who've served.
