The cane was used in my primary school, not my secondary. I felt it a number of times, but I wasn't really concerned with its composition, just its effects. It was used by all teachers from the fourth year (age 8) onwards. None of the canes were crook handled. They were said to be supplied by the local "blind school " from their stocks of handicraft materials so may have been bamboo. I remember that they were quite flexible, more so than garden canes, and thicker than garden canes. Whatever they were made of they delivered a powerful sting to hands and / or bottoms.
We had large classes of 40+ children and the cane certainly helped teachers keep order, so to that extent were a good thing. We were all used to being spanked at home so I don't think any of us were done any harm by the school cane.

@jackcros: Sounds like the type of cane used for basket weaving so probably not bamboo.

@Sharon: I never did basket weaving so am not familiar with the materials used. I remember that one teacher kept his cane in a tin of linseed oil to keep it supple. When called out for a caning, we had to go to the cupboard, wipe excess oil off the cane with a cloth kept in the cupboard and bring the cane to teacher. After bending over and receiving our whacking, we had to return the cane to the tin in the cupboard. Preparing our own "rod of correction " was a nice refinement of the punishment process.
