@Carla1951: "Caned" meaning specifically punished with a cane, a long thin bamboo stick.
In my day in the UK caning was common in schools. In many schools, including mine, only the headmaster or headmistress was authorised to use the cane, in some schools other teachers could use it too. It was common for pupils to be caned for bullying, or smoking, or bunking off school, for example. I was lucky - I was never caned at school myself.

@MartinII: The cane was made from rattan, not bamboo.

@Sharon: Sometimes one, sometimes the other I think. But you will know the sort you were caned with were rattan.
