Hmm... Id say there is nothing to be afraid of besides simple rejection? But that seems a little obvious and I don't want to be mean. So I'll say this: In the face of grave defeat, you will smile. That smile will show you know no fear. And for those who cannot see the courage you show, they do not deserve your world.
Honestly, the best thing you can do is go up to a girl and admit you're really shy. If she can understand that, then you literally have nothing to fear. And that alone should be enough of a reason to smile. ^_^

I'm almost in a similar position. I can say hi to a guy but it's hard to have an actual conversation with him, that's why I'm quiet around boys.
