I don't know why I see these as a beautiful addition to a woman's neck but it does add a profound look

Yes. I think they look elegant. They were popular when I was a teenager, too. I owned several.

@cowboyblue: Yes, I remember two in particular: one was black velvet with a cameo, the other blue velvet with an abalone butterfly. I didn't wear them with my school uniform, but on the weekends with dresses or peasant blouses.

It's interesting how fashion trends recycle. I had a couple as a teen and I even wore chokers to both my high school proms.
