I Think Age Is Just a Number

馃槒

Several of the people I chat with are either over 70 or very close to it. I tend to believe them when they start talking about grown up grandchildren. I've never seen a reason to lie about my age.

I know that some do, but then if they say they're 70+ and start talking about high school and boyfriends and fwb and crushes on teachers, it shows they are lying.

If I tried to claim I was only in my thirties, then I would have to be so careful not to mention any of my delightful great grandchildren. Couldn't ever refer back to my high school days in the 1950s. It would definitely cramp my writing style. I joke on here about lying a lot, but anyone who reads my posts knows that I don't really. I couldn't possibly keep all my stories from sounding like lies.

I sometimes embellish. How much more interesting is a story with fun details than one that says "I took my grandkid to the store. She was cute" Yeah okay. They all are. Why does anyone want to see that. Took the dogs to the park. They played. That is boring. So , when I talk about anything I add detail. Like any published writer (which I am not) I know that detail is what makes or breaks a story. When you read a book, the vast majority of the story is in the details. Take out the details, you might as well be reading a police report. Just the facts is good for police reports but not so good for story telling.

So yes. I'm an old woman. It took me a long time getting here, but here I am.

You know the funniest thing about being old (especially here) is that younger people tend to say things that point out that I am old. But they seem to think that saying old is an insult. It isn't. No matter what words they use (prune, is one, rocking chair, is another, old, is also very popular) the intent is to insult. The most insulting part of that is the fact that they think they are insulting me. As if I'm going to cry because someone points out that I am old. They should realize that, they too, will be shrivelled up old prunes in rocking chairs if they are lucky.

I look back and try to remember when I stopped thinking the elderly people in the world were worth less than the young. And I see that it was at my grandfather's knee. He was old. White rim of hair, shiny bald head, toothless, smelly. He was worth a lot to me. He was priceless, not worthless.
