I Have Self Image Issues

I have minor self image body issues. (Revolves around skin problems, particularly.) I think a lot of people I’ve met have suspected that I have a eating disorder. I’ve gotten a variety of comments over the years when they see what’s on my plate at buffet restaurants. The more polite folks just ask me if I’m a vegetarian. I’m not exactly. I eat meat on rare occasions, particularly steak, but I have little protein in my diet.

I’ve never really thought I was fat, I just think sometimes I get carried away about the state of my health. I think I monitor what I eat more than most people. I often turn down fast food offers, candy or fried foods. Probably 70% or more of my diet is fruits and vegetables. But hey, I must be doing something right. I feel alert, not lethargic or fatigued and my body doesn’t hurt, like a lot of these 18 year olds that tell me they’ve got a broken back already.

I’m like this because I’m actually really scared of getting diabetes. My biological maternal grandfather died from complications of diabetes, and three out of five of his kids are diabetic, including my mother. I seem to carry more of my fathers genetics, so it seems less likely, but that doesn’t matter. I think of all the rare occasions in more recent years when I’ve splurged on McDonalds, pastries or candy, a can of soda, thinking to myself about how all the cheeseburger trips in a lifetime eventually add up, and it makes me paranoid about how much more closer anyone could be before they’re pre diabetic. I know a girl who’s two years older than me that is 6 or 7 months pregnant that just found she’s diabetic. You don’t have to be old.

If you have rice or corn, have beans or legumes with either. Examples - Cajun red beans and rice, bean and cheese burrito on corn tortilla, Calico salad (black beans, red beans, corn, celery, onion, salsa, some o/v, and seasonings), corn and lentil chowder (if you are adventurous). In this way, you are getting all the essential amino acids that you might be missing by having so little meat.
