I Miss The One That Got Away
There's always a smile on my lips whenever I see his likes or comments on my posts and he always messages me on holidays. It reminds me of realizing that he's the one that got away....Let's call him Dran.
We were high school friends. We both lived in the countryside where people knew each other. His mom adored me whenever we met at random places, she always started a conversation often asking how was his son in school, if we were close or what-nots.
Dran invited me to the prom. He was not my first dance but the last. Maybe he didn't want all the fast beats. We danced in a sweet music and he was so quiet but staring at me all the time. I can't even remember if we ever talked while dancing.
He was the crush of my best friend so I made way for them to be high school sweethearts. I never saw him after graduation because I went to the city for College and he stayed in the countryside.
As soon as I finished college, I worked in a German Telecom Company. There was a task on rotation in the Billing department and I dreaded it, to leave voicemail messages for subscribers if no reply to our emails for past due balance. Guess what? He was a subscriber. When he called me back, that started our communication again.
My condo was just a walking distance to his office but I never had the guts to check on him even though he already told me that if ever I had time, I can drop by and we can have snack. He always had overtime as an Engineer but he can make time for me if I ever showed up. On weekends, he always went home to the countryside.
One weekend, he asked me out. I met him with his five friends at the bowling rink and I felt a bit conscious when he introduced me to them because everyone gave me that look, from head to toe with unfathomable grin.
I never thought it was already a date, just reuniting with an old friend. We dined and watched the movie, What Dreams May Come. We spent time reminiscing high school then he confided about the girls swooning over him in his neighborhood and were fighting for his attention. I told him to follow whatever his heart desired. He said, he didn't really like them both because they seemed clingy and younger.
Small world. The other girl was in the same University with my sister and they were classmates in one subject. Sister told me that this girl, Coco was very jealous of me saying that Dran was always talking about me even mentioning that he spoke of me as the kind of girl that he wanted to bring to his mother and marry later. My sister teased me, Perhaps, Dran had loved you eversince.
My company had a massive retrenchment when Dran called me asking if we can meet before he left for a job in Australia. I declined because I was having a turning point in my life but I wished him good luck. I relocated and that ended our communication.
A decade after, he found me on Facebook and I accepted his friend request. I'm not an avid user of Facebook, my sister made my account.
I always see his posts, now based in Australia and married to Coco.
I often dreamt of him, we're always a couple in my dream. ☺️
How about you, who's the one that got away?
