How Does One Start A Band?

Like a cover band/ rock band? I've always wanted to be in one - classical singing is fun and all but my first love is rock/metal music

In this day & age it's easy!...plenty of on-line places to meet or old-school putting up a card at a music store. The hard part is rehearsal space (and not upsetting the neighbors). Meet some people, talk first, get a set list, rehearse...then find a place to play. Plenty of open stage nights, stuff like that....just make sure the other people are cool...cuz if your not having fun, it's not worth it!

@luctoretemergo Seconded on the "open mic nights". That's a great way to network as well as showcase your ability

@uncalled4 OH yes, totally.... hooked up some GREAT jams from open mics

theres a whole bunch of ways... you can advertise, there are websites like craigslist and kijiji or downtojam. Busking can get you connected quickly because one musician always knows someone whos looking who knows someone whos looking...

Auditions. Craigslist ads. An arduous process, but to me, ultimately worth it.

Keep in mind that you will encounter more than your share of hacks, flakes, and pretenders. Don't get discouraged.

@uncalled4 but that said, dont judge too harshly on ability... some learn really fast or adapt material quickly, but some will stay amateurs

@HeteroDox Everyone has to be on the same page. If everyone agrees that it's just for fun, that's fine. For me, though, I expect the 100 percent I put into everything musical, whether I'm playing a corner bar or a 1400 seat theater. Some people are disconnected on that level.

@uncalled4 ttally... first singer went diva in no time flat, but the second actually made us think about music as a creer...

Hang out around music shops, hang fliers at them, look for them. Support your local bands by going to their shows and mingle at them.
