I Love David Sedaris

I first became aware of Davis Sedaris some 25 or more years ago. He would speak on NPR for a good period about once every one or two weeks as I recall. He read "The Christmas Diaries". His voice, unusual as it was, was perfect for what he wrote- the right accent, the right timbre, and the right tone.

I never knew when to expect him - not keeping up with the shows or schedules - so I simply locked my radio on NPR to get the full Sedaris story.

And, now having heard that book so wonderfully read, who could possibly avoid running to the bookstore and buying the book, and then every Sedaris books written thereafter - on the day they are released.

And, who coming to Washington D.C. for a convention a few months out and looking for evening diversions, and seeing that David Sedaris is speaking at George Washington University the day after we (the wife, who also absolutely adores Sedaris' writing, and I) arrive in the capital, could possibly resist purchasing two tickets for the talk within four minutes. It does take a couple of minutes to find your credit card in your billfold, you know.

And, who, having just heard a reading from Sedaris' just released new book, could possibly avoid standing in a long line to buy the book and for a chance to speak to the author, and when you do meet David Sedaris, you and your wife talk to him for more than five minutes, and you both feel that he is really interested and that the interest in the conversation exists on both sides. I know that sentence is horribly run-on, but it was planned that way to express the energy felt.

Well, the answer to all of these questions is neither my wife nor I. We did each of these things without thinking, and we are very happy that we did.

I don't find it much on the radio now, but I still dearly love to hear David Sedaris read his works. I might have to buy some audio books of his - as long as he is the one doing the reading.

I'd also like to meet Hugh. I understand that he just went with David to his first Sedaris reading.
