Originally "money" was a trade note, like an I..O.U. that can be payed forward to someone else and they can collect on it.
Like the number "0" it was a place-holder for a value. Since many goods would be available at different seasons it was not always plausible to exchange goods for goods directly, so the trade note was invented.
