I Love Film

Looks like for the time being one of my most favorite films is on youtube in its entirety, Vera Chytilova's Fruit of Paradise, a modern feminist retelling of the story in Genesis about eating the forbidden fruit, the visuals is what i find most arresting and impressive, for the first few minutes is abstract wonderfulness, throughout the film the female lead who resembles Margot Kidder in a cute way at times moves as if a puppet, and the end with the rose is a stunning visual treat. A jewel of the Czech New Wave. Made in 1969, the only bad thing is that Vera was not allowed to make anymore films for a long time after this, only she could have improved upon this un-improvable masterpiece, as this improves upon her previous Daisies, her most famous work.Fruit of Paradise deserves more attention and acclaim, and the Czech new wave in general which only about a dozen or so have big international recognition.... if you watched Fruit of Paradise and want to see more films like it, i suggest Valerie and Her Week of Wonders, Daisies, Birds, Orphans and Fools, Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors, The Devils and The Death of Maria Malibran, all are exquisite visual feasts, and situate cinema on the same level as the much older art forms of painting and classical music.
