In the early days of the space program, NASA engineers spent a significant amount of time and money developing a ballpoint pen that would write in zero gravity. They eventually got it to work. The Russians used pencils.

Not everything has to be high tech. NASA invented the Fisher Space Pen, but it turned out that a pencil works far better in zero gravity.
