It's got buttermilk in the recipe which adds a bit more flavor and the cream cheese icing is really rich so that combo. The red food color doesn't do anything for the flavor. The schools used to make a cake for lunch called "Beatnik cake"...like a red velvet cake except they colored it with pureed canned beets instead of artificial food dye.
