Why does red velvet cake taste like....nothing?

It's got buttermilk in the recipe which adds a bit more flavor and the cream cheese icing is really rich so that combo. The red food color doesn't do anything for the flavor. The schools used to make a cake for lunch called "Beatnik cake" a red velvet cake except they colored it with pureed canned beets instead of artificial food dye.

Ugh yes I don't know why it's a flavor people get so into. It's less chocolatey chocolate with ketchup in it.

lol, I think it's very tasty! The one I'm not impressed with is king cake like they eat in New Orleans.
When it is well made, with beet, it can taste good.
But most of the red velvet cake is just over rated.
