The Bishop who co-authored Magna Carta was excommunicated by the Pope. Why would the church not want people to have basic freedoms I wonder?

Because the church, certainly in the past, was all about money and power.. control.. we have to remember the church was very powerful and very dangerous.. blasphemy was a crime back then

@Adaydreambeliever And it was accepted that God had ordained those chosen to be king.

He wasn't excommunicated, he was suspended from ecclesiastical functions for refusing to publish the excommunication of the other authors. The suspension was lifted on appeal. He remained Archbishop of Canterbury until his death
@Tuscan Records differ but it amounts to the same, the church lashing out at the liberty of England.

@JackieDaytona The Roman Catholic church, considers the Pope to be the supreme authority on earth, any attempt to limit that authority could be justification for excommunication.

I heard something about their deity imbuing its creations with free will. Perhaps the church knows better than their deity?

The church...pfft coughs into my red wine.
For one thing, none of the church has ever been about that kind of freedom and for another, none of Europe was about that freedom
