are nothing and everything the same?

A friend asked me this awhile ago, if nothing and everything are similar, who decides the value of something?
Or is something just a slice between everything and nothing?
Please tell me what your opinion is on this matter.

Value is centered around utility, which is why a house that you occupy perpetually for years is more valuable than a cheeseburger you will consume in about 10 minutes, or in my case 5 seconds.

For example, the value of insulin is practically nothing for me because I don't ever plan on utilizing it. It can mean everything for the diabetic because it's the difference between their life and death. Thus something can be both everything and nothing.
