What is your professional opinion on long distance relations?

DragonFruit · 61-69, M
Not being a psychiatrist/psychologist, I don’t have a professional opinion....just a personal opinion.
Having been in a long-distance relationship myself (which lasted over 3 years, but ultimately failed because of reasons other than distance), and having known a number of people who had long-distance relationships (some of which failed, some of which were successful), I think it really depends on the mindset of both individuals involved.
Many people have had relationships with those in the service or overseas for career purposes, and if both are committed to each other and to the relationship it can definitely work out. The fact that it often doesn’t is due to the fact that one (or both) of the people in the relationship is not fully committed (either to the other person or to the relationship). In my case, the fact that her father made things very difficult influenced her decision not to continue the relationship (which could have happened even if I was in the same town).
These days it’s easier to have a long distance relationship, as you don’t need to write letters/make long-distance toll calls. Technology makes it easier to keep in touch (even by video chat calls like Skype)

Can work but you're gonna have to fight like hell for 'em

@XReaganX fyi, to those saying it doesn't work, my parents are a prime example that it does. They've been married for 23 years.

Not for the impatient. Find someone with goals the correspond to your own so that you can come together physically as you work together to achieve them.
