How often does this happen

So I’ve been talking to girl online and she was saying her data was about to run out. So she asked if I could send her money to help her so we could still talk. She does actually seem more legit than the other scammers I have gotten messages from. But I don’t know what to do. It’s not a lot of money and right now that’s all she’s asking for. Do I just suck it up and take the risk since I feel like there might be something there or is that risk too big?

Don't send the money. It sounds like a scammer.

Don’t send her money

Definitely sounds like a scam to me. I've never heard of a person genuinely running out of data and requesting money to keep it going, but I've heard of hundreds, if not thousands, of people who have been ripped off by this exact scenario.

My best advice is to tell her you wish you could help, but you don't have money to spare, and that when she has the money for data, you'll be glad to keep up the conversation then. If she still seems genuine about that, and agrees to wait, then she's real. If she gets mad about it or just ignores you, she's a scammer.

You must be stupid if you think you should send money

Keep your money that's all she wants !

Can you do it without any risk to your own security in the full knowledge that it might happen again?
Edit
Google her username and number followed by the word scam.

@Johnblackthorn that’s what I’m thinking like if I can just send her cash or something like that that way she can’t actually steal any of my information
Johnblackthorn · 56-60, M
@DRtist102 suppose she/he (you don't know) sends the same message to 100 people and only halt of them send 10 dollars or whatever your currency is?
If she has she's done it before, her name and or number can be googled and it might come up as a scam, youd be amazed.

Seems like a really bad idea.

Does it sound like even if it were real it would be a person you could trust. Randomly asking money of strangers for menial things? Sorry but doesn't sound like girlfriend or even friend material in the best case. Shameless scammer in the worst case.

She's likely a scammer, but the alternative is do nothing and lose her forever. I've not met a woman yet that didn't work on the pay-2-play scenario. No matter who it is, you always pay for fun.
Johnblackthorn · 56-60, M
@weg6067 spot on mate.

Yeh, no way would I involve with this person, don't let your generosity get the better of you
