What's a good way to ask for a hug without sounding needy?

How about, 'May I have a hug?"
...if you can't just be human, be yourself, then you need a different set of...associates.

I guess you could swoon, but that is about as archaic as the phrase "whoopsie-daisies" used in Notting Hill (and pointed out as being such by Julia Roberts' character).

You need one, you ask; the reaction of the askee gives you a measure of who THEY are, and allows you to evaluate whether or not they can be trusted with handling a bit of you & your feelings, your true Self.
