Some things are to perfunctory in life that they're tasteless and draining
I know for a FACT what that is like. I used to sit down for like 8-9 hours coding up some heavy things for a development department of a company. This was NOTHING I could talk to with anyone about and nothing FUN even to hear from people who understand it. Plus, you barely interact with anyone and only have small talk :p
So, since that small talk was nothing important, there quite essentially was NOTHING to talk about, which astonished my mother as to why I could go to work for 8 hours and come back with NOTHING to say

you mean a guy?
years ago there was a study which indicated that people have an average number of words they feel compelled to say each day.
The problem is that this number for the average guy was found to be a bit lower than that for the average gal.
So take a guy who goes out of the home to work and uses up most/all of his words for that day before he gets home...then his wife or gf or lover buttonholes him and tries to engage him in conversation, and he is spent, in this particular sense.
Worst case: he goes out and she stays home, because she has not discharged nearly enough to be able to be less talkative...
