I Like to Write From Time to Time

Growing up, we didn't really go on many family vacations. We weren't necessarily poor, per se, but we were definitely poverty-adjacent. Case in point - while I never went hungry, I did have to eat lima beans as a side with nearly every meal for a couple years because my mom and her gardening friend went a little overboard on the growing/canning.

Blech.

Anyway, one of my fondest memories from my early childhood is the occasional trip we would take to visit family in eastern Kentucky. I distinctly recall the "wood" paneled Country Squire station wagon that my parents had at the time because I had the privilege (trust me, I viewed it as a privilege) to ride in the back of the vehicle, facing the traffic behind us.

The Country Squire was anything but sleek, but it was a fairly smooth ride - an incredibly important fact to note, given that we were only on the interstate for a brief period of time before transitioning to the bumpy, curvy, roller-coastery, backroads in the hills surrounding our destination.

Sometimes I think I would give just about anything to go back to the days when I had no concept of distance, or speed, or even time, to be frank. I was perfectly content to just sit back there for the several hours it took to make it from home to roots and back again - just don't ask me to go back to the outdoor plumbing I experienced upon arrival.

Wow. This is almost like you took it out of my childhood memories. I loved it.
