I Love and Hate Arguing Politics
I have no issue with finding differences of opinion and working toward a solution we can both live with. The problem comes when we start arguing to the point of fighting, drawing into opposite corners and unwilling to give up a single inch. I can't think of a more fitting graphic for this group, a donkey and an elephant duking it out. That's essentially what the American government has become, a dysfunctional assembly of elected buffoons. We say things like "your idea is stupid because it's a stupid idea" and call each other names like libtard and repugnican.
Watching the individual responses during the SOTU speech made it clear to me that some within the Democrat party are unwilling to work toward solutions simply because the majority in office is the wrong color. They have dug in with defiant opposition fighting with passive aggression. It's a sad repeat of the Boehner-led House GOP a few years ago.
I don't agree with everything POTUS said, but when he says, "Tonight, I call upon all of us to set aside our differences, to seek out common ground, and to summon the unity we need to deliver for the people. This is the key. These are the people we were elected to serve.", the House Minority Leader (Pelosi) sat there sucking a lemon while the Senate Minority Leader (Schumer) applauded. And when he began to speak about infrastructure "that our people deserve" as a goal, BEFORE he got into the HOW of his policy, she sucked another lemon as if to say that even the goal of repairing infrastructure is not a goal she was willing to work towards as long as her party is the minority.
Is red vs blue any different than black vs white? Are we doomed to repeat not just race wars but engage in partisan warfare as well?
