What will happen if we do get in a big trade war with China?

Walmart's going to be rather sparce pickings I'd think.
At least until we get domestic sources for stuff again. Probably not a bad idea. Stuffs going to be really expensive but it probably will last longer.

Problem is it's more expensive buying anything American made than it is to buy Chinese made. For now at least !
Same with Indian or Taiwanese produced goods.

That means fewer folk buy American. No jobs created (quite possibly lost if U.S.sales dip far enough !)
That sends America into recession which in turn affects the rest of the world since so many economies are aligned with America's.

@Picklebobble2 buying stuff made by slaves or people working for slave wages is not right either. I'd say get used to having to make stuff locally and quit shipping stuff from overseas. Shutting down corporate farms would be good too.

@Tastyfrzz All excellent suggestions. All 20 years too late !
If China starts producing an equivalent Ford-F truck at a fraction of the U.S. retail price....

Walmart is not your problem. Most of the engineered and electronic components in everything you consider US made is sourced in China, like Ford and GM cars, fridges and major appliances. Prices on pretty much everything will go up. On Chinas hit list are crops like Soy beans, which they can buy elsewhere from friendlier countries who will be happy to have the trade. So jobs will start going all over.. From farm workers. to Truckers and small town businesses who need them to live. And the US doesn't have the cash to go buy on the world stage any more.. You need to deal with people who will take your IOUs , like oh... China?

Anyone who takes on China is going to have to have citizens willing to work much harder for less money. We can't be competitive otherwise. Also, the quality of products coming from China is now starting to move beyond anything we can do. I bought a wireless keyboard that works perfectly well, and cost less than £5 (including the shipping costs from China). That means it's probably cost them about 35 to 50p to make it. The West just can't do that.

@GlassDog might have to figure out an alternative.

@Tastyfrzz I'd say so. The UK and US are still strong cultural "soft" powers. The problem is that music and film is easily pirated compared to physical products.

I like your thinkin', Tasty! But China will win. And prices wouldn't have to go up in America if the fat cats on top would take less. And that ain't gonna happen either.
SW-User
we meaning who?
Tastyfrzz · 61-69, M
@SW-User the USA under the trumpster.

You'd be in trouble
Tastyfrzz · 61-69, M
@SW-User I'm sure we will be but on the bright side the reduction in farming will be good for the land.

Less cheap tat that breaks after 5 minutes

@SandInMyShoes lol, I bought a can opener at Walmart one time. Thing was mad out of something like solder. Couldn't even make it through one can! Was bent into the impression of my had after the first attempt!
