Simple. The Buddha's teachings have nothing to do with religion. When asked by his disciples about religion, he said his teaching were not about what people believe, but about the means of attaining happiness in this life
It was only as Buddhism spread to other countries that it began divide into various sects and adopt or modify the local beliefs. As it spread and became popularised, it turned into religions: the 22 Tibetan Mahayana and Ninayana schools, the Theravadin traditions of Thailand, Myanmar and Srilanka, the Zen of Japan, and the Pure Land variants in China and the rest of South-East Asia.
The actual teachings of the Buddha involve an eight-fold path incorporating right mindfulness, speech and action, meditation, and learning from direct experience.
Buddhists of the religious kind are usually cultural, that is, they support Buddhist ideas but tend to also believe in superstitions such as re-incarnation and spirit worlds, they practice Buddhist rites such as at funerals, and they tend to financially support monasteries and monks.

Many Buddhists simultaneously have other faiths. One such was the reknowned Vipassana teacher Goenka, who died a few years ago.

One can have or any faith or no faith and still be a Buddhist.

Students of the original Buddhist teachings who meditate every day and practise the precepts are Buddhists. Many are atheists or agnostics.
