Is this an insult?

My niece is in her 40s but immature for her age. She has a lot of typical philosophical sayings she likes. An example: "It's not a problem until it is.". In other words, don't worry about potential problems or try to plan for them or prevent them, live a worry free life no matter what might be ahead.

Recently she repeated this one to her boyfriend: "Today is the first day of the rest of your life.". She told me his answer is the same for all of her sayings lately: "Edna, that's wisdom. And you're full of it."

I think he is giving her a playful insult. She believes he is complimenting her wisdom. Your reaction?

Sounds like he's just trying to get through it without his head exploding. If I had to deal with that every day, I would stick my dick in a plug.

@BlueVeins Lol! Thanks for the laugh.

I knew a fellow once who could string cliche after cliche together nearly endlessly. It was infuriating to listen or talk to him for any length of time.

I'm pretty sure you're right about his response being an insult, playful..or not.

Bwahahaha! You're right. Definitely a playful insult. He's very smart. Knows she wouldn't have a clue it was an insult.

A backhanded compliment if I've ever seen one.

That's deep
I wouldn't really know without seeing him say it. But the phrasing of the "you're full of it" makes me think it is a backhanded insult. If it is, then she needs to ditch that dude immediately because he obviously thinks she's stupid and is getting away with insulting her to her face without consequence. If he's willing to disrespect her like that what other ways will he betray her because he doesn't respect her?

I guess the only way to be sure is to confront him.

I'm with you, playful insult.
I’d agree with you. I can sense a slight eye roll behind it. Cliches and homilies can become tiresome rather quickly.

Yup sarcasm but he seems easy going and non argumentative so thats good. In a long term relationship he may get tired of this
