When you are young, have a good stereo that accurately reproduces music you want to best experience and would not consider mp3. As you get older you are less willing to spend the $ of studio quality equipment and even if you did your ears don't hear all the sounds anymore. So you go to a high quality mp3 then it just gets worse and regular mp3 does not sound that much different.

It needs practice, like listening to other better formats, is what I think.
